Hangzhou Flower Garden has been undergoing an expansion project since April 2000.

According to the general blueprint, the Hangzhou Flower Garden, after the completion of the expansion project, will be mainly composed of a seasonal flower square, a special region for water flowers, and an indoor flower garden on its major west-east axial line.

In addition to the three theme sections, there will be a park for rare flowers, an orchid ecology garden, an art museum for flower arrangement and decoration a leisure villa region and a forest restaurant.

What is more, the fields in the Hangzhou Flower Garden originally for flower production will be converted into open lawns and green belts. A large-scale greenhouse, presumably the biggest one in China, will also be erected and a large specialty park featuring Chinese flowers in general and flowers from Netherlands, Japan, France and Italy in particular will be built.

Under the project plan, the specified area for the expansion project amounts to 250,000 square meters whereas the total area for building projects adds up to 19,500 square meters. The estimated investment for the project runs up to 8 million yuan in total.

In the first phase of the project, 500,000-square-meter Season Flower Square and the 20,000-square-meter green belts will be built together with Underwater Fountain, Flower Distributing Stage, Lotus Pool, Flower Reflection Fountain, Sculpture of Flower Sea, etc.

The Flower Distributing Stage will be flanked by Goldfish Canal, Wading Pool, Quiet Water Pool, Pillared Corridor etc.

In terms of the architectural guarding line for the whole project, no large-scale huge building will be erected while, on the principle of "miniaturization, concealment, refinement, and marvel," all the buildings will be harmonized with the West Lake and the current environmental style and infrastructure of the Hangzhou Flower Garden.

In terms of flowers to be planted, quality flowers of foreign origins will be playing a central role in the garden. They are to be planted in streamlined formations in big masses in order to achieve a prominent effect.
The completion of the project of the Season Flower Square before the National Day in 2000 has turned the Hangzhou Flower Garden into a theme park.

The Hangzhou Flower Garden is a first-class park within China, featuring the theme of flowers as well as that of water and integrating tourist attractions with leisure activities. During the National Day vacation, a large garden-party was held at the Hangzhou Flower Garden to usher in the oncoming new century. The garden-party was popular with the local people.
