The spectacular pavilion stands on a very vantage spot on one peak
nearest to the West Lake on the High Wind over Wu Hill.
Including the underground floor, the 7-storied structure towers at
41.6 meter, looking extremely imposing and gorgeous in a style best
combining those of the Yuan Dynasty and Ming Dynasty.
The grand style is greatly emphasized for its general appearance as
a whole while every tiny detail is carefully planned and worked out.
The central roof of the town god pavilion looks like a bottle gourd
while the other 4 minor roofs around the chief roof look like phoenixes.
The whole pavilion seems like a group of soaring phoenixes. The pavilion
looks exactly like a building in paradise in every Chinese's imagination.
On the second floor, an antithetical couplet written by Xu Wei takes
a prominent position on the eastern posts. The two-line poem by the
scholar of the Ming Dynasty reads: "When was the lake and hills
spreading 800 li like a scroll of painting created? The pavilion commands
a panoramic view of all the 100,000 households in the city."
On the three walls of the first floor on the pavilion are a large-scaled
colored hard wooden sculpture depicting the residents' lives of Hangzhou
in the Song Dynasty. The eastern wall displays a stone sculpture showing
famed personages in Hangzhou's history and 10 folk stories. The leisure
services are available from 3rd floor up to the top floor.
The Chenghuang Pavilion commands a breathtaking view of the West Lake
and the urban sprawl by the lake. Looking around, you can see the
heaven stretching endless above, the landscape spreading to the horizon,
and the city is prosperous and dynamic. It is really a paradise on
Earth.
