Wu Hill, a solitary bulk of hills, zigzags its way into the urban
center of Hangzhou. It is the last part of the Cloud Hill. For its
unique position, traditions, legends and cultural heritage features,
the hill became one of the ten new attractions at the West Lake in
1985.
The landscape of the Wu Hill has five unique features.
The 800-year-old camphor trees and 600-year-old dragon cypresses stand
like towers, serving as weathered witnesses to history.
Rocks take all kinds of grotesque forms. Some look like animals and
some resemble people. Caves and
cliffs show their rocky
appearances in different ways and colors. It could take days for a
tourist to go through a looking journey with all these rock formations.
Temples are numerous. The most representative used to be the august-looking
Town God Temple, surrounded by towering trees. On the relic site now
stands a many-storied pavilion-like structure built to recover its
previous magnificence and significance. The building commands a breathtaking
panorama of the lake.
Many temples resulted in many temple fairs. Festivals used to take
place for the sake of folk celebrations that happened to fall on red-letter
days in Chinese Lunar Calendar. When such a temple festival took place,
visitors were numerous, displaying a picture of ancient customs in
local styles.
The Wu Hill used to attract great writers and poets since ancient
times. They left something behind in memory of their visits. Ouyang
Xiu, Su Shi, Lu You, Xue Wei, Li Yu, Yu Dafu were among the famed
literati. Their writings about their visits to the hill are still
popular today.
The Wu Hill is a good place to look out at the city, the lake and
the Qiantang River beyond the mountains. Standing high on the top
floor of the town god pavilion or a vantage spot on the peaks and
feeling the heavenly breeze touching your face, you can have a wonderful
time looking at the lake on one side, at the Qiantang River on the
other side. Or you can look at the urban sprawling away or at the
green hills.
