North Peak and South Peak used to be two
most prosperous Buddhism sanctuaries in ancient times in the deep
mountainous area around the West Lake. Each had its temple and pagoda
on the top of the peak. In a day of spring or autumn when trees were
in a mist, people boating on the lake could now and then have a view
of the distant pinnacle of the pagoda on either of the two peaks.
In the South Song Dynasty, the view of the peaks and their Buddhist
monasteries became famous and found its way into the list of the Ten
Scenic Spots.
But from the Qing Dynasty on, the pagodas either collapsed into dereliction
or were further destroyed by thunder and only the bases were left.
The view of Two Peaks Kissing the Sky existed in name only.
Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty decided to let the name stay in
the top ten views of the West Lake after his lake tour. A stele and
pavilion were erected at Hongchun Bridge on Lingyin Road to memorialize
the view. That's how the ancient name of the two peaks kissing the
sky remains today.
Though the Buddhist monasteries are gone, the two peaks are really
vantage spots for a panoramic view of the lake, especially in autumn.
The south peak is beside westlake. Standing on the top, one can command
a full view of the urban sprawl as well as the lake. The new look
of the city and the eternal changeless lake tend to let all thoughts
go through one's mind.
Mao Zedong wrote a poem about the North Peak during his stay in Hangzhou
decades ago. Now a stone tablet with his poem inscribed on it has
been erected on the North Peak. Ascending along the winding path to
the top, one can hear the breezes ruffling pine tree tops as if it
is raining meanwhile mist rises from valleys and form into fog covering
slopes.
