In the West Lake floats three artificial isles by the name of Lesser Yingzhou Isle built in 1607, Mid-Lake Pavilion built in the Ming Dynasty and Ruan Yuan's Mound respectively.

In 1800, Ruan Yuan, Zhejiang Viceroy, had the lake dredged and a mound built with the silt. The mound was named after the viceroy. But the mound was left untouched and undeveloped, as the silt was too mucky to bear any heavy constructions. As time evolved, the isle became a refuge of wildlife for centuries.

It was not until 1981 that some architects figured out a blueprint to turn it into a tourist attraction. Some thatched cabins, resembling a private garden estate,

were built in a style typical of this part of the South China. Bamboo groves were planted. A family banner in orange flutters in breezes above the top of bamboo groves. A pavilion is added to the fringe of the tiny isle and a dock is built to moor visiting boats.

In 1985, the tiny isle, with its imitation theme park in ancient style, found its way into the favor of local people and became one of the new ten scenic spots of the West Lake.

In summer, a costume performance at night showcasing the husband-selection competition and the subsequent wedding ceremony in ancient China is the biggest seasonal attraction.
