Yunqi Zhujing (literally, haze staying on a path zigzagging in the bamboo forest) is far from maddening crowd, about 15 kilometers from the West Lake.

It is deeply hidden in the Wuyun Hill.
A winding path twists itself slowly and poetically from the foot of the mount up to the top. A bit far from the path, there grow lots of luxuriant trees of hundreds of years, in addition to the ocean of the bamboo groves along the ascending path. Nothing here hints at urban sufferings and worldly pursuits. A visit along the path into the retreat harmonizes man and nature.

Built as early as Wu Yue Period (907-978), Yunqi Zen Monastery added

charm and mystery to the scenery. Toward the end of the Ming Dynasty, the temple in ruins was rebuilt and its name began to spread as a senior monk by the name Lotus Pond of the Pure Land Sec dwelled here to rebuild the sect.
Legends have it that both Emperor Qianlong and Kangxi were so enamored of the scenery and its harmony on their respective trips to the resort that they came back later for a revisit.

Due to its everlasting reputation around the West Lake, Yunqi Zhujing topped the list of ten new scenic spots in Hangzhou through a public selection in 1985.

The best time to visit the retreat is in the summer when the cicadas chime in the trees. Visitors can enjoy coolness and listen to the breeze blowing through the forest. Sometimes they can walk through haze veiling the bamboo groves while the scorching sun is burning beyond and above hills.
