Gaily-painted Pleasure Boats add to
the charm of West Lake and carry tourists to the picturesque scenic
spots. Ever since ancient times, it has been the best way to enjoy
the picturesque West Lake.
As early as in the Tang Dynasty, there were boats for tourists to
enjoy the scenery. In the Song Dynasty when Hangzhou was the national
capital, there were luxurious royal boats for the Emperor and his
entourage to enjoy the scenery and those small simple boats for common
people to make a living: vendors used boats to sell wine, vegetables,
fruits, foods, etc; entertainers used their boats to move about to
find their patrons.
Dragon-head pleasure boats first appeared on the West Lake in the
Qing Dynasty when Emperors Kangxi and Qianlong toured on the Lake
when they visited the South China.
Nowadays, the West Lake is dotted with tens of hundreds of different
boats, unprecedented in the appearance, function and cultural overtones.
It has been regarded as a graceful pleasure to take a boat tour on
the West Lake in the evening.
Standing on the boat in moonlight, you will have all sorts of feelings
well up in your heart. Placing yourself on the Lake shimmering with
colorful lamp light and in the happy crowds mixed with the sound made
by paddling, your will forget where you are and feel only boundless
happiness.
