Yuhuang (Jade Emperor) Hill towers between The West Lake and Qiantang River. When wind rises and clouds scud, the jade emperor hill presents viewers on the top a unique, breathtaking view of the West Lake and the Qiantang River on either side under the vast emptiness of the universe. The scenic attraction finds its way into the hearts of local people for its unique grand view and subsequently finds its way into the new top ten scenic spots in Hangzhou.

What Yu Dafu, a 20th-century Chinese writer of Zhejiang origin, described about the Jade Emperor Hill is probably most illustrative about the scenic attraction. "I stand on the top of the Jade Emperor Hill and take a
panoramic view of the lake and the river. What a view! Looking northwestward, I see mist, waves, and shadows of clouds enveloping the West Lake with hills on three sides. Looking southwestward, I see the zigzagging Qiantang River and some sails are moving in the wind. I feel as if the river could come and go at the wave of my hands. Looking eastward, I try to find out the gate to the ocean. High wind blows, and tides surge, creating a spectacular panorama. As for the mountains across the Qiantang River and the gigantic Pagoda of Six Harmonies on the river side, I feel that they look tiny and negligible from where I stand high up on the top the mountain."

The Jade Emperor Hill has its cultural roots deeply buried in Taoism. On the top stands the Fortune Star Taoist Temple, once the biggest Taoist monastery on the West Lake. On the side of the hill, the Purple Cloud Cave hides its big space inside the rocky heart of the hill and the Seven Star Jars Formation conceal its mysterious history and legends from curious visitors. To the north of the hill, there still exists the Eight Diagrams Farming Fields left over from Song Dynasty. The sciences at the hill itself are ever changing in four seasons. The hill is a huge attraction for local people in autumn and winter, especially when the Chongyang Festival comes on September 9 on the lunar Calendar and in winter.
