¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡
The peak stands in front of the temple of the soul's retreat. Geographically
speaking, the peak is completely different from the surrounding mountains.
The peak is of pure limestone while the surrounding mountains are
of sandstone. The peak looks quite unique. Legend has it that an Indian
monk by the name of Hui Li, upon his arrival in the valley, was surprised
to see the peak towering in the valley. He wondered aloud: "
when did peak come flying all the way from India to this place?"
The name of the peak is passed from that time down to today.
The cliffs of the peak are dotted with rock niches where various stone
statues sit, stand, sleep, or laugh silently. The statues number more
than 340 and all are under state-level protection. Many of these stone
statues are quite unique and have unparalleled values in the art history.
The water-eroded caves in the peak are the very birthplace of many
local legends. And the rocks on the peak look quite strange and resemble
flying dragons, running elephants, crouching tigers and fleeing monkeys.
The age-old trees are entangled with leafy vines and their knotty
roots are partly exposed. In the places where rocks are exposed, they
show hard thick lines as if cut out by heavenly knives.
Yuan Hongdao, a celebrity of the Ming Dynasty, spoke highly of the
Peak that was thought flying from afar. He said the peak came out
number one if compared with all other hills and peaks around the West
Lake. |
